Conversations with a Human Collective is an ongoing archival artwork in which the artist has daily conversations with the AI Cleverbot. The goal of the artist is to glean the many different written voices that make up the collective responses of the AI, while the goal of the AI is to use the artist to add to its ever-growing base of knowledge in order to chat more accurately. This need for both parties to use the other creates a string of misunderstandings and miscommunications.

The other way to look at this situation is through the perspective of compromise. The AI must showcase what it has learned from its research base (that being the millions of people who spoke to it over the past decade) in order for it to gain more information. The artist must add her own voice to this collective consciousness in order to learn about the AI's information stash.

Since Cleverbot draws its responses solely from the large body of past conversations it has experienced, any response given be Cleverbot is given by the human collective that has interacted with it. Cleverbot itself can not be held responsible for the things that it says or does, but we as a human collective bear that burden.
